I hear what you are saying. But I think the problems of the homeless are so immense- throwing a little cash at them may salve a conscience but it does nothing for the real problem- mental illness, lack of affordable housing for the poor, lack of health care for the poor, lack of resources to help the poor become less poor.

Give a homeless person a little cash- and they'll buy alcohol, drugs or a burger- but they'll still be begging tomorrow. I think I'm with Koan on this one- get the government to do something to really and fundamentally address the problems of the homeless- which are varied, and need a LOT of infrastructure. IF you want to give now, give to your local foodbank and homeless shelter- because they do heroic work in the country right now, because most people just don't want to think about this (or they want to blame the homeless).

a couple of weeks ago I needed some cash late at night night so I went to a bank that has an ATM inside the front entrance, there were two guys inside, one sleeping the other just lying down, At first I was a bit alarmed, I asked what are you guys doing here, and the guy answered its cold outside man, I told him OK i won't rat you guys out, I took out two hundred bucks and gave him a 20, he was so happy he god blessed me all over the place, I had thought what if that was me lying there with no home, no job and no money. I'm not a guy that usually gives money to healthy looking panhandlers but homeless men and women don't ask for money in my experience.

I give them money all the time bentway. I always have.

But that is not the solution for Christ's sake.
