Bob - Re: "intel swore it would never make a java chip"

I'm not quite sure what you are alluding to.

Intel has worked diligently to enhance the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for Intel x86 CPUs - under license from Sun. To that end, Intel has demonstrated that Pentium II machines running Java under the JVM are extremely fast.

Intel has and does support Java and the enhancement of Java applications - since Intel CPUs are the most ubiquitous, Intel expects this to be good for Intel.

Since Java, in its purest form is an interpretive language, it makes great demands on CPU performance. That fits neatly with Intel's agressive ramping of Pentium II/Deschutes/Katmai performance - a great selling point for Intel CPUs.

Supporting Java does not require Intel to make a Java chip . A universal CPU - which the x86 CPUS are - that can run Java, Windows, DOS, Solaris, UNIX, etc. will be the best general solution.
