Wonder why the Canadian government would feel need to fear China reprisal for the routine and just arrest of some Chinese woman doing a stopover ? Believe the Canadian government should hang tough out of principal and as expeditiously as possible hand Meng over to the Americans for violation of unspecified laws applicable to Meng’s doings, whatever they may be, and at the same time provide tax-fee shelter to the many scoundrels, thieves, knaves and other less desirables who absconded from China and sought refuge in Vancouver. Look or rather, do not look too closely, the timing of arrest in China of some ex-government sort of Canada is purely coincidental, certainly not polically motivated, and should not be linked to any happenings any where at any time any how. Am sure the said fellow would be able to hang tough, not spill the beans, not be flipped, and not name names etc etc, and am sure Canada has enough non-ex-go ernment sorts to carry on business w/ important trade partner or even not trade. What the heck, in for a penny in for a pound, all-in on a strong hand over a matter of principle in the cause of better securing planetary peace is worth the sacrifice. Am sure Xi Jinping does not know anything before the arrest was planned and made. Am sure there is not a whole list of names on the watch list. According to Reuters, former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig has been detained in China. Kovrig's employer, International Crisis Group, is working to secure his "safe" release. However, Reuters noted that the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou has "stoked fears of reprisals." "International Crisis Group is aware of reports that its North East Asia Senior Adviser, Michael Kovrig, has been detained in China," the think-tank said in a statement. "We are doing everything possible to secure additional information on Michael’s whereabouts as well as his prompt and safe release," it added. China’s Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Public Security did not respond immediately to questions faxed earlier about Kovrig’s detention. The exact reason for the detention was not immediately clear. The Canadian embassy declined to comment, referring queries to Ottawa. Kovrig, a Mandarin speaker, has been working for the ICG as an in-house "expert" since February 2017. Prior to that, he served as a diplomat for the Canadian government between 2003 and 2016, with stints in Hong Kong and Beijing. And while it's possible that the timing of Kovrig's arrest is purely coincidental, the timing is certainly suspicious.
