The United States has been a divided country for as long as it has existed. The worst period was during Lincoln's Folly, with 600K dead in the Civil War.

Older people today, including the President, remember the post WWII period when the United States economy benefitted greatly from the destruction of much of the economies of Europe and Asia. What they don't realize is that that period was the exception, not the rule.

Something similar occurred after WWI, resulting in the Roaring Twenties.

So, yes, the theatrics are different as a result of technology and personalities, but the divisions haven't changed much.
