we got a mention in this article by zdnet. just another confirmation of how 98 will be the yr of biometrics. they basically say fingerprints getting most interest in corps because of cost and size.

Existen dos sistemas b sicos de NEC de identificaci¢n de huellas digitales, estos son el AFIS21 y el PID.

El AFIS21 (Automated Fingerprint Identification System o Sistema Autom tico de
Identificaci¢n de huellas digitales) es un equipo usado para manejar grandes vol£menes de
informaci¢n.

Grandes volumenes de informaci¢n significa millones de personas registradas, cada una con
sus diez huellas de los dedos de las manos almacenados. Esto implica un poseer un
equipamiento considerable, lo que trae aparejado un costo asociado bastante alto; por estas
razones, este equipo se utiliza en aplicaciones gubernamentales.

Un ejemplo t¡pico de estos sistemas es el usado por los organismos policiales. En este sistema,
un detective consigue una huella en el lugar del crimen y le solicita que se identifique a quien
pertenece. El AFIS21 comienza entonces una b£squeda ultrarr pida por toda su base de datos, al finalizar muestra un listado
de las posibles personas y las probabilidades de corresponder a esa huella. En esta aplicaci¢n, es necesario un equipo que
verifique a alta velocidad debido al tama¤o del archivo de huellas de huellas y a la rapidez con que se requieren respuestas.

Pero tambi‚n existen caracter¡sticas puntuales que nos diferencian del resto. Una de
ellas es el algoritmo usado com£nmente en la identificaci¢n de las huellas dactilares: se
identifican los puntos de bifurcaci¢n y terminaci¢n de las l¡neas dactilares con lo que se arma
un mapa de puntos que es grabado como registro. El sistema NEC es el £nico que adem s
utiliza el concepto "Relation", esto es tomar en cuenta tambi‚n la cantidad de l¡neas que
pasan entre esos puntos. Esto le da una consistencia y seguridad £nica en el mercado.



El PID (Positive IDentification o Identificaci¢n Positiva) se basa en una arquitectura de PC. Esto reduce los costos
enormemente en comparaci¢n con los grandes servidores que necesita el AFIS21.

Cuando se usa el PID? Cuando la cantidad de registros archivados es peque¤a o cuando lo que se requiere no es una
identificaci¢n de la huella para saber a qui‚n pertenece sino que se tiene la huella y el nombre de la persona y se quiere verificar
su identidad.

Esto tiene importantes aplicaciones en distintos mercados:
1.- Programas Sociales.
Una buena posibilidad ser¡a controlar el pago del seguro de desempleo, jubilaci¢n u otros beneficios. De esta forma se
evitar¡an que dichos beneficios sean cobrados por personas que no corresponden y se eliminar¡an las duplicaciones o los
recientemente conocidos casos de decuplicaciones en el cobro.
2- Prisiones.
Se puede colocar un sistema PID en cada acceso que se desea controlar. As¡ se agilizar¡a y mejorar¡a el control de los
presos que salen los fines de semana, los controles de entrada y salida a los patios, etc. Adem s, se integrar¡a con un
software que regule los horarios de los presos dando un valor agregado al control de acceso.
3- Medicina.
Los principales usuarios ser n lo centros privados importantes. Para identificar en las consultas la identidad del paciente
puede usarse un PID, si el paciente llega en una emergencia o en estado de inconsciencia se puede usar un AFIS y
verificar inmediatamente de quien se trata y qu‚ patolog¡as posee.
4- Registro de conductor.
Con un equipo port til se logra que un patrullero verifique la identidad del portador del registro del conductor, as¡ como
sus antecedentes de infracciones.
5- Acceso a cajeros autom ticos.
Reemplaza o complementa al codigo de identificaci¢n que se ingresa actualmente.
6- Control de acceso.
Control de acceso en lugares de alta seguridad; por ejemplo el control de acceso de la caja de seguridad de un banco,
donde se debe verificar sin lugar a equivocaciones que la persona es quien dice ser. Si llega una persona que tiene su
llave y sus documentos podr  confundir a un guardia de hoy en d¡a, pero no podr  enga¤ar a un guardia equipado con
un PID de NEC.

La novedad que presenta este sistema es que los algoritmos implementados en el PID no son unas sencillas l¡neas de
c¢digo que identifican m s o menos huellas digitales. Lo interesante es que se utilizan los mismos algoritmos que los
utilizados por los equipos AFIS21. Y estos son los algoritmos probados y elegidos por el 59% de la polic¡a mundial.

NEC, lider mundial en AFIS para polic¡as, se comprometi¢ a sacar al mercado equipos basados en PC, con la condici¢n de
que estos brinden la misma seguridad que le vali¢ el prestigio en equipos m s grandes, y lo hizo.
