Bill - Re: "Deschutes, 440BX and 100 MHz Buses"

Production silicon was veriifed for the 440BX around last Thanksgiving and Intel started 440BX production lots in early/mid December.

Sampling of the 440BX is well along - customers are building product with it. With about 8 or 9 weeks from wafer start to final shipping, production volumes will hit the street in late February/early March.

I think indications are that 100 MHz is not the upper limit for current silicon - 0.35 micron. They may be able to squeeze 133 MHz out of it. However, DRAM manufacturers have to improve their SDRAM speeds to make this possible - 7.5 nS cycle times. I think many are having trouble with 10 nS (100 MHz) chips.

A modified/enhanced 440BX is in the works for extended addressing - for larger memory sizes.

The Deschutes has actually been well ahead - Intel has been building inventory on this part and shipping to customers under NDA (Non-Disclosure-Agreements) - which have been WIDELY DISCLOSED! First parts, as indicated in the press, will be built with the 440LX chip set and run at 66 MHz bus speed/333 MHz Internal CPU speed.
