"It's a very shrewd business move on the part of TCI," one hardware exec tells Junko Yoshida of EE Times. "TCI has essentially set up a horse race between two very motivated companies" to complete the task of creating low-cost, flexible set-top box architectures in a multi-vendor and modular environment. Microsoft is making an equally strategic move, since it aims to seize control of digital TV and dominate the consumer electronics platform with Windows CE.
