Ex-prosecutor corrects Trump on use of the word 'rat' to describe Cohen BY JUSTIN WISE - 12/16/18 03:36 PM EST Ex-federal prosecutor and past Fox News contributor Andrew McCarthy on Sunday called out President Trump for describing his former personal lawyer as a "rat," saying that the president may want to use a different word. "Sir, in mobster lingo, a ‘rat’ is a witness who tells prosecutors real incriminating info," McCarthy said on Twitter. "Perhaps a different word?" McCarthy then added that "searches of lawyer’s offices common enough that DOJ has a procedure for them." "Here it yielded evidence of crimes you said he should be jailed for. You should stop," he said. His comments came only hours after Trump claimed that Michael Cohen, his once longtime personal attorney, became a "rat" after the FBI conducted a search of his office earlier this year. "Remember, Michael Cohen only became a 'Rat' after the FBI did something which was absolutely unthinkable & unheard of until the Witch Hunt was illegally started," Trump tweeted early Sunday morning. "They BROKE INTO AN ATTORNEY’S OFFICE! Why didn’t they break into the DNC to get the Server, or Crooked’s office?" In April, the FBI raided Cohen's home, office and hotel room and seized troves of documents and computer files. The search warrants for the raids came partly based on a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller. Cohen was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for crimes he committed while working for Trump. The sentence stemmed from eight federal charges Cohen pleaded guilty to in August. Among them, Cohen admitted to violating campaign finance law by paying off two women who alleged to have had affairs with Trump more than a decade ago. Prosecutors have said that Cohen worked at the direction of Trump while making the payments, something that Trump has denied. McCarthy said on Fox News last week that the Southern District of New York was "clearly going after the president on campaign finance violations" as part of its case into Cohen. "I think if you read the sentencing memo the Southern District filed in Cohen’s case, it’s clear that Trump is the target and he’ll be indicted eventually,” he said. thehill.com
