You are right on 2nd, I bow to your knowledge on 1st. I just use a plain old broker. I would rather be sure my money is in safe hands. Just leaves commissions and fees, The dentist of article while not a "real" daytrader makes his broker smile.

As a position trader who is short about 50% of the time, I can assure you that margin must be a significant source of income for online discount brokers.

Even though I carry a small cash balance when I am long, my margin costs in 1997 were about 2 1/2 times my brokerage fees. The two together amounted to just over 5% of profits.

I wonder if this is fairly typical?
