I was out of the country when Illumina munched PacBio, one of my former employers, and I was completely unaware of the deal until you mentioned it. I was at Applied Bio working on a collaboration with Illumina when they were just starting out, then the project was canceled when the two companies had problems working together. I think Illumina discovered they could succeed without AB's help. They were sure right about that.
