This is too much:-)Kidnap suspect comes down from pole United Press International - January 17, 1998 19:31 %STATE %CA %KIDNAPCHASE V%UPI P%UPI LOS ANGELES, Jan. 17 (UPI) - An armed kidnapping suspect who held police at bay for more than seven hours by climbing a utility pole in a residential area has surrendered. A Sheriff's Department spokesman says 26-year-old James Morgan Nagel of Bellflower was treated at a hospital for a self-inflicted superficial bullet wound to his forehead. He will be booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. No one else was injured in the incident. A caller tipped off authorities that Nagel had a gun and may have been trying to kidnap a woman from a Bellflower residence. When deputies found him sitting in a car near the home, Nagel allegedly fled, leading them on a 30-minute low-speed car chase through Downey and Bellflower, where he abandoned his car and ran into a residential area. Deputies said Nagel shot at them several times while running away, but didn't hit anyone. He then climbed a utility pole in the back yard of home, and threatened to kill himself if anyone approached. Authorities evacuated about 40 residents from the surrounding homes, shut off power to the utility pole, and called in special weapons teams and crisis negotiators. After trying for several hours to talk Nagel down, deputies shot him with at least ten round of plastic bullets to no avail. Nagel reportedly called for medical attention after he accidentally fired his automatic pistol several times during the siege and grazed his forehead with a bullet. Nagel surrendered the gun after being sprayed with a five-minute blast from a high-powered water hose, but he had apparently strapped himself to the pole with his belt and needed paramedics' help getting down. -- Copyright 1998 by United Press International.
