And just to vernacularize it I'll go with the word enormous. So - enormous coronal mass ejection (ECME). I think that's the best characterization because it leaves room for some variability in size and level of impact. Therefore some room to "hope for the best". In that vein the "best" would be that the ECME isn't Earth directed. So in Sept 2017 we had: "Sun Unleashes Monster Solar Flare, Strongest in a Decade"space.com This was in the approach to the lower end of cycle 24. Then back in 2012: "While you didn’t see it, feel it, or even read about it in the newspapers, Earth was almost knocked back to the Stone Age on July 23, 2012." extremetech.com VIDEO These two would not be classified as "enormous". There was one that approached enormous pretty recently (within the last few years) from the "backside" of the Sun. Bigger than the 2012 "near miss". I can't find reference to it now (I'll look harder later) but it was close to what would have been utterly catastrophic if it were directed at Earth. It would be nice to think that it was "the one". So there's room for optimism on the CME front. And I still put crustal displacement very, very low on the probability scale. My main concern is magnetosphere strength and magnetic pole shift as that relates to viability of the electrical grid. Volcanoes are definitely tied into that and I've been most vigilant of the seismic and magnetic pole situation. I completely understand your family concerns. My first grandchild (a granddaughter) just entered the world. While I was there, in private, I seriously read the riot act to my son-in-law about his responsibility. I'm pretty sure I got through to him. It was the first time I ever spoke to him like that. I also gave him what I consider the proper reference material. All of it already brought to bear on this board. I went prepared for that "mission". I could get philosophical about it all, but I won't do that here. This board is just for what I see as relevant to staying updated on the state of play we've been dealt. As I said in the header almost 9 months ago...a new script has been handed to us. Learning it and adjusting to it is a process. We're all in this together...and most people don't even know it. So, on the optimistic side...we're a few steps ahead.
