Randy and Terry, Good topic. PBS had a great show, last night, on the restructuring of American industry and its affects on the middle class.

One story included a family from San Diego, the 50ish father who previously headed a billion dollar plus operation and, after years of searching, couldn't find more than a hardware sales job. His three sons (age 20-27 and living at home due to lack of $), all worked for a grocery chain even though son #1 had a MBA. Seems that 95% of all new jobs created by San Diego companies are being staffed either by part-timers or Mexicans, across the border, at about a buck an hour.

Zenith is in the same boat. It can try to keep its Melrose plant open producing CRTs and TV picture tubes or close it and ship the equipment and key staff to Mexico to join its large Mexican labor force. Heard from Zenith staffers at the CES that the new HDTV sets will be manufactured in Mexico, too. All the tooling has been completed in Chicago.

One of the most critical problems facing Zenith is the lack of new engineering talent. Old timers aren't being replaced no matter how much Zenith tries to replace them. LGE, fortuneately, has been a very big help in filling the most critical holes.

Lots of issues for Jeff and Bob to address. May they have the wisdom of Jack Welch, sans harshness of Chainsaw Al.
