yeah, maybe by the time I'm retired I'll understand about half of what these kids are
talking about. I was having a real hard time. I'm tickled that it's helping you. I'm kinda
worried about Style. I hope he didn't get stuck in the Bermuda Triangle on his yacht.

When is he suppose to return?

Glenn

This is the first in a series of surveys of 50 MIS managers. The purpose of the
surveys is to identify industry trends and gain insight from purchasers of data
networking equipment. This report presents the results of the first survey
conducted during December, 1997.
Fundamental Highlights:
<sum> An estimated 53% of survey respondents plan to increase their information
technology (IT) budgets during 1998. Only 10% indicated that their IT
budgets would decline compared to 1997.
<sum> As a percentage of IT budgets, the median spend on data networking
products will increase from 20-29% in 1997 to 30-39% in 2000.
<sum> Increased bandwidth and improved security are key 1998 data networking
priorities. MIS managers plan to increase their 1998 spending across the
entire network, with an emphasis on switching.
<sum> An estimated 80% of survey respondents purchased Ethernet LAN
switches in 1997. Within the universe that purchased Ethernet LAN
switches, about 84% purchased 100Mbps switches. This supports our
forecast that the 100Mbps Ethernet LAN market will increase from $1.8
billion in 1997 to $3.6 billion in 1998.
<sum> Cisco was the data networking vendor that was most improved in 1997.
Looking forward to 1998, MIS managers plan to increase their spending
the most with Cisco, by a 3-to-1 margin in terms of survey responses over
its closest competitor. Bay Networks also received favorable responses in
the survey.
