Another big question is, how aggressive does KVH get at new product announcements regarding FOGs? Do they wait for a contract so they can protect their IP for as long as possible? Does this current announcement impact existing FOG sales given they are still signifying it’s a prototype? It’s exciting. At the same time, one has to wonder, how long til it makes an impact? Waymo has ordered 82k cars but they haven’t indicated what their timeline is. Cruise Automation is indicating they have a rollout planned for this year but no other details.

Another question is, does this product suddenly make KVH an acquisition target, if they have just prototyped a product with a competitive advantage? Look what happened to Mobileye. It’s my guess KVH is delivering this in prototype mode so the autonomous companies can’t own and can’t tear apart the product.

It’s worth noting, so far, the market has essentially no calculated value on KVH FOGs. What would velodyne be worth if it was a public company? $2b? If KVH gets any positive feedback through contract or investment, a valuation change will be pronounced from here.
