That was the day Olsen lost his reputation as a visionary. Nevertheless, he still had matrix management for a few years, until that went bust too.

"There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in his home!" (Ken Olsen, CEO of Digital Equipment Corporation,

Legend per snopes..

Imagine how things have changed.. I was already a software cowboy / hired gun in the wild west days.. when the IBM PC did not yet exist by a few years..

I have a smart phone.. a freedom machine for me.. it is a handheld computer only dreamt of as a sci-fi prop 30 years ago.. It does telephony as a tiny feature of its many uses..

true or not is actually moot wrt to that statement... reality is that computers are essential to our present lifestyles in most cases.. my 80 year old mom would not be without hers.. whether price shopping, video calling with my sister in Cali from her home in Montreal to getting instant weather forecasts, checking gas buddy (yes she is still a competent driver) etc etc

Even our PM thought it important to legislate our postal workers in Canada back to work so folks could buy on Amazon for Christmas LOL

Not making a value judgement.. just looking at what is

EDIT: as an aside.. I interviewed a few prospective hardware suppliers for a client in those days.. I was leaning towards DEC Alpha.. The IBM sales guys during our discussions said after I pointed out te superiority of the DEC machine to IBM's offering.. literally said to me.. what do you want .. Speed, price or IBM .... too funny
