Sure: Good research, excellent news.

The 'Gun Lake Band', which is formally known as the
Matchebenashshewish Band of Pottawatomi Indians of Michigan, used to be included in the Huron Pottawatomi (until 1992), but I think that the four existing applicants in the news story do not include Gun Lake. Gun Lake is just about to be Federally acknowledged as an Indian tribe. I guess that there will shortly be five tribes awaiting compacts.

I haven't heard Bill Church's opinion. In the past he expressed confidence that Gun Lake would get their compact one way or another, and maybe now he'll be less than pleased that the other tribes will get through at the same time.

IMO, I'll bet Bill is happy about this, and we should be too. My guess is that the real intent of this announcement is to scare the state into negotiating the compacts, because if they don't the Feds will, and the Feds may cut a lousy tax deal for the state. If nothing else this announcement will probably speed up the compact process; and it should give investors more confidence (including Premier and Excelsior). We now know that the end result will be positive.

This is a very cool announcement. Thanks for finding and posting it.
