IQBAL, I'm more familiar with Type II than Type I. For Type I, AMLN is trying to get Pramlintide approved. They had modest success on their first Phase III trials, but their type II data left much to be desired, so they are doing 4 more trials. Pramlintide is a sythetic analog of the hormone Amylin which is made by the same pancreatic cells that make insulin. It is thought that Amylin will smoothen out the glucose levels which can get out of control and lead to serious consequnces.

There are also attemts to give insulin via spray or capsule that protect the protein from destruction by stomach enzymes. I believe that there is also research ongoing concern pancreas transplants, but all of the above are really out of my area.

I believe that ABC's Nightline is doing a diabetes report tonight. One of their ads
apparently mentioned pancreas transplants for type I, but someone on the AMLN
thread indicated that it would be on neww treatments for diabetes. A short while ago
the NY Times did a story on new treatments for diabetes. I have linked the article to
the clinical trails section of the Diabetes page at:
