The World Bank is a bossy lender offering loans to fund projects it wants to see happen, that might not happen otherwise.
The US contributes the most, $1.5 billion annually, and is the bossiest voice among the lenders.
You'll notice the Bill Gates Foundation is a contributor, and the World Bank in turn lends this money out to various nations to pay for disease reduction programs the Gates Foundation promotes. See how that works?
38 percent of the loans to China, went to things that provide benefits beyond China's border, such as pollution controls and green infrastructure projects. They're all projects China would not do on their own. .
This is a list of the nations and organization which contribute the World Bank. The contributions are a small fraction of the loans issued each year because generally new loans are funded by repaid loans.
You'll notice many of the borrowers progress onto becoming contributors. China contributes more than Saudi Arabia, but less than India - and way less than Brazil.

| Private Citizens | Donald Trump and his band of newbies are looking globally for pressure points on China - I get that. But World Bank lending is very unlikely to be one of those points of leverage. World Bank lending is essentially self-interested lending by the lenders - very similar to China's own lending in developing economies.
I know it seems somewhat incredible, but people who pay the piper call the tune. Lenders tend to get value for money. |
