Right; it means the power was generated without using fossil fuels. Electricity doesn't become free in the monetary sense unless you make it yourself. I do. I still pay a fee to be on the grid, but I also get a cap-and-trade rebate and a small feed-in credit for my XS electricity, which covers the grid fee. It took about 3.5 years to recover the cost of the system.

Water behind dams, geothermal plants, and sufficient storage will take care of most of that. I don't disconnect from the grid cuz I figure I need a month of storage during the rainy season. If the grid falls apart, I'll have to plug in my seasonal creek.
