Social Security when constituted was estimated to give 5 years of benefits to the elderly, when they retired. Under those terms it was sustainable. However, they didn't plan for the lengthening lifespans of Americans and they most certainly didn't plan for the eventual elderly composition and ultimately shrinking of our population. In other words, the original design was a flawed design that resembled a Ponzi scheme. As such, it was never designed to be sustainable.

If we made it so that it was limited to 5 years or limited to the dollars you put in, plus a rate of interest equal to what you could get on a 30 year treasury, then that would be sustainable. But being math challenged, Democrats never create something that can actually be paid for in the long run.
