Barry. Re: I am definitely an optimist. How about ya'all.

Did I sound pessimistic? gg.

I guess I am naive but Asia has not scared me yet. It scared my portfolio. gg. I have called all this musical chairs. When somebody gets the chair someone misses. I am banking on rotation of the economies. And ours looks still ok. Maybe slower but still ok.

I think I'm quite optimistic too. I was listening to the analyst Q&A which followed Intel's Q4 report on the WEB last night. When asked about the SE Asian effect, Intel management replied that softness in some areas were offset by strength in China and India.

When you add the strength in Europe and USA to the equation it starts looking much better. So far the Q4 reports in the big names such as Intel, Sun and even Apple seem to indicate minimal impact from the SE Asian crisis but the market seems to reject some of the good news, implying the impact might not be fully realized in the Q4 reports. If we get similar Q1 reports, the market might start reacting better and most of the fears will be behind us by then.

Thanks for the article. I hope the "soft landing" buzzword takes off and starts soothing some fears out there.

Shahen Petrosian.

BN 1/17 Intel to Unveil QuickWeb Product to Speed Internet Surfing
Intel to Unveil QuickWeb Product to Speed Internet Surfing

Santa Clara, California, Jan. 17 (Bloomberg) - Intel Corp. said it will introduce on Monday software to help Internet service providers eliminate some of the delays that plague users of the worldwide computer network.

Intel will sell Quick Web for an undisclosed price to Internet service providers, which connect users to the World Wide Web. Intel said it is negotiating with the 30 largest Internet service providers and already has signed up three.

Quick Web is Intel's latest product to try to boost usage of the Internet, which could mean more sales of personal computers that use Intel chips. The world's largest maker of microprocessors for personal computers also makes a digital camera that lets people make video phone calls and send still images over the Web.

Internet service provider Netcom On-line Communication Services Inc. agreed to introduce the product Feb. 1 after about 700 of its users helped test it, Intel said. ''Our customers have told us that speed is one of the most important attributes, and Quick Web gave them a great improvement,'' said Scott Wills, Netcom's senior vice president
for new business ventures.

Users will pay a premium for the service, probably $5 a month, and Intel and the online service provider both will get a percentage of that. Users will have to change one setting on their browsers to benefit from the new technology.

Santa Clara, California-based Intel's Quick Web cuts Internet waiting by compressing graphics so they flow through phone lines faster and by storing images at Internet service providers so that later requests for the same graphics can be processed locally.--Greg Chang in the San Francisco newsroom (415) 912-2980/jac

Barry,

Nice article. Optimist?, usually.

But you can almost feel the sentiment changing in here, Intel earnings coming in OK, Sun OK, you've got MSFT and the boxmakers soon, if they come in OK, we could see a tech rally. I worry a little about IBM / currency translation. Intel actually made money with it's hedges, if IBM didn't hedge, hummm.

I think I mentioned a while back that if earnings came in good for the tech stocks, the sentiment could change from "the techs are the most exposed to Asia - sell" to "the techs have enough US and worldwide growth to overcome Asian problems, as opposed to other companies with slower growth - buy tech". Techs as a safety play, a lot of fund managers have to be in stocks, where else can they get growth this year?

Just some thoughts on a closed market day.
