Buffet never spends much either. After all he has occasionally been the richest person in the world. I think that shows he is obsessed with that asset value number and his folksy charm is just his way of deflecting attention from his obsession. He hollows out companies like CokaCola and IBM so that they can no longer innovate and just milks them as long as possible insisting on massive buy-backs to keep the stock prices high so he can take out bigger loans. I think he will be remembered as our age's John D. Rockefeller, onlly without kids.
