However, when I talk to any one of the several small computer shops around, they either have one there I can purchase or can call the wholesaler and get one within a matter of days. This happened most recently last month when I needed an internal Zip for my home machine (actually, I got it through mail order because I saw the post on this thread with the ridiculuosly low price).

I think you're talking about the IDE or ATAPI internal Zip drives. It's the SCSI internal retail drives that seem to be in shortage.

Perhaps BB, CC, F, the other big chains, have decided not to carry the internals because it is not worth the trouble to them to provide minimal tech support to the largely neophyte customer base for the profit involved in the transaction. They sell CD-ROM's, modem cards, video cards, etc., but I would bet the profit:tech-support ratio is much higher in these cases. The small computer stores, on the other hand, probably know their clientele much more personally so that they can know whether to suggest that they install a drive for a customer or provide phone support when something goes wrong in a do-it-yourself install.

Yes, I think this is likely to be the reason for the shortage of the retail internal SCSI drives. I posted a message a while back about the seemingly never ending shortage of the internal SCSI drives. At the time I surmised that the reason for the shortage was that Apple was basically taking all of the internal SCSI drives Iomega could make. But now seeing all the internal SCSI drives in 5-packs, I think Iomega may be intentionally restricting the number of retail internal SCSI drives with the tech support cost being one of if it not the main reason. I was hoping to see the ATAPI Zip in retail boxes soon. But I can why Iomega may not want to do this - at least not yet.

Internal shortage, why?

Simple all of the internals are going to OEMS, SCSI Zips are going to Apple.
