Dan, Wal*Mart used to say that with each new store opened, they didn't mind to--and indeed, expected to--lose money for the first 3 years of operation. As in, until the competition folded so they could raise prices...

Of course Wal*Mart didn't give anything away; I never said that. They would lose money, net, because of their very high costs of doing business.

Anyway, I'm not trying to start a Wal*Mart debate. All I wanted to say was that there are many examples of large companies with strong financials who crush their competition. Microsoft vs. Netscape is not an isolated incident, that's all.
