Sun Microsystems to Provide $17 Million in Systems and Services to GTE

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 1998--Sun Microsystems Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW - news) today
announced that GTE, one of the largest publicly held telecommunications companies in the world, has selected four Sun(TM)
Enterprise(TM) 10000 servers (also known as Starfire(TM)) running the Solaris(TM) operating environment, with the SAP
R/3 solution to meet the fast growing transaction processing needs throughout GTE.

Sun will also provide GTE with implementation assistance through Sun Professional Services. The purchase of Sun systems and
services totals $17 million (U.S.) over the next year.

Sun's Starfire servers will allow GTE to manage its corporate and financial data -- that currently run on a mainframe system --
at much greater performance levels and achieve better scalability. GTE also required a system that could handle batch load
requirements in excess of one million transactions per hour.

Sun's scalable systems will enable GTE to accommodate an increasing number of users over time. GTE ultimately plans to
support 15,000 users running R/3 globally, making it one of the largest SAP sites in the world.

Maybe there is more! Meanwhile, I sure am enjoying the run!

Richard.
