I would remove children from the custody of parents who smoked around children, when those children were made seriously ill by that smoke (I'm sure I said this already.) Is that clear enough? I would sever parental rights when those rights impinge upon the health of a child in a meaningful way (which means the child's life is endangered.) Freedom for parents can mean death to a child. See, for example, the Freedom of Religion cases involving the denial of medical care by the parents of children who are Christian Scientists. I have no problem if the parents wish to die of diseases that western medicine can prevent or cure, but a minor child should be allowed to live until he or she reaches the age when he/she can make a meaningful decision regarding the cessation or continuation of their own life, and by what means.
