IDC is like DataQuest. They publish technical papers (farm out the research where necessary), and then sell them by the copy. I've been purchasing papers from them for many years.

Some studies are commissioned, others are done with the expectation that they will make (tens or hundreds) of thousands of dollars per report. You are never allowed to make copies of IDC reports, unless your firm is the one that paid them a fee for unlimited distribution rights.

IDC has a good reputation for objectiveness in the industry, unlike a few others which tend to bias themselves towards a specific vendor. However.

If I were to hire IDC to do a study on my product against a competitor, I would make sure to tell (pay) IDC to device a series of tests that make my product look better than brand-X. In the computer industry that is very easy to do. Then you arm every salesrep with copies of it, and hope the customer isn't smart enough to figure out the apple and oranges thing.
