She said she loved Laos because it was still free from obnoxious Americans.

The Chinese tourists play the role of "obnoxious tourist" in SE Asia. They are massive in number, and have yet to learn that things which are (I guess) OK in China are not OK elsewhere. Yelling at the top of their lungs in restaurants and social settings, cutting to the front of lines, traveling in tour groups where the tour guide grabs all the profit margin and leaves next to nothing for the local shops, don't worry, there aren't enough Americans to even make a dent in the local mood. There are loads of Chinese tourists, and the numbers grow each year.

We are starting to see restaurants in the main areas with Chinese signs, Chinese waiters and Chinese menus, and no English. Fine, but it's weird and takes a bit of time to get used to. In 5-10 years I'm pretty sure they will take over and Chinese language will be ubiquitous.

We're leaving for the US this summer or next, our oldest kid is about to finish elementary school (5th grade now), so it's time to get outta here!
