Market forces work well indeed, and usually better than the other alternatives. But can you ever truly achieve market forces is a republic like the US? I don't think so because government is always meddling with market forces in order to try to achieve some percieved greater social good (or in response to lobbying by special interests).

Only under a dictator can market forces truly be allowed to work. For example see the economic miracle in Chile which began with tremendous economic upheaval and pain that could never been endured if the country had not been controlled by a dictator.

Of course, since he forced them to endure pain (even if it was for their own good), was Pinochet truly benevolent? <G>
