A VERY TRUE STORY IN COLORADO SEVERAL YEARS AGO
One of my son-in-laws got a phone call in the middle of the night that Jeff (a 16 year old boy that had been fighting cancer for a couple of years) had just passed away in a Denver, CO hospital. My son-in-law asked me if I wanted to go down to the hospital to meet with Jeff's family and have prayer with them. "Certainly", I replied and we got in the car and travelled about an hour to get to the hospital. When we arrived at the room, we met with the parents and what a story they told.
My son-in-law had led Jeff to Christ (My son-in-law is a school teacher and was doing double-duty, filling in as an interim pastor at Jeff's church until one was procured).
Here's the story.
Jeff was a "fighter." He just wasn't going to let this cancer "beat him." But frankly, he was getting thinner and thinner, having reaction to chemo-therapy, etc. Just a few Sundays before, Jeff had been asked to share his testimony and it was taped. It turned into a challenging message and a plea to get right with God.
So, at the hospital, Jeff was a regular "minister" for our Lord Jesus Christ! That very night he was sitting on the side of the bed talking when out of the blue he said: "I've got to go now, Jesus is here."
And with that statement he slumped over and died.
Wow. He was able to communicate to his parents with his last breath where he was going! He was seeing Jesus, recognized him, and in a matter-of-fact manner, he communicated what he saw and was experiencing.
My son-in-law had the funeral. The church was packed---breaking all fire-code rules---they just kept crowding people in---standing in aisles, in the back, in the foyer, etc. During the funeral, Jeff's tape was played, that had been recorded a few weeks earlier---then my son-in-law gave a message that was passionate and loving. Yep---he gave an old-fashioned invitation---some of his fellow-teachers came forward and upwards of 100 kids came forward, some of Jeff's unsaved family came forward and they all prayed to receive Christ. Talk about a touch of heaven!!!
Glorious!!! I had a "front row" seat, as I was playing the organ. SO---young Jeff accomplished more for the cause of Christ and the good of humanity in his few short years than many of us will in the course of a life-time.
Have a very special splendid week, James.
