Rocky why don't you go short if IOM is so mired in the toilet.

Your anticipated pre-earnings runup has not occurred, so now there's only 3 days left. Asia is up tonight. If that continues through tomorrow, the market should be up Tues, all except IOM, which lately lags a rising market by a day. Thus a whole lot of IOM holders are going to bail Wed. So if you don't beat the crowd, you will probably be holding for earnings.

Now does someone so down on IOM as you are, really want to hold during earnings? Sell, Rock. Sell short. Just do it and you'll feel much mo better.

<That's because there is no defense. Everything in that post is true.>

from 207.183.153.23

That's my Rock. Standing fearlessly for "Truth, Justice, and the American Way."

You know, I tried finding a newsgroup on SYQUEST, but there is only one on my news server, and it was for LINUX. There are three WIN based newsgroups for IOM. I wonder why. Could it be that such a small number of people actually own a SYQT device, and those that do are too computer illiterate to know how to post? All except Linux users, who as we know are usually more sophisticated. They write things like this about Sparky:

As far as using it as a backup system, I couldn't really say for sure.
I have only one comment to make. I copied the entire contents of the
start-up cartridge (about 700MB) to my hard drive. It took about 2 hours.
So, my point is, don't expect it to be a fast backup.

Lets see 700MB / 7200 seconds < 100k/sec. Slower than the slowest PP ZIP! Next:

That entire package is not necessary. I also have a SparQ, and all you
need is the ep.c driver. You may want to check your setup (or the
capabilities of your par-port) -- I was able to copy the contents of the starter cartridge (~700MB) to my harddrive in about 25-35 minutes. This was on a AMD K5 166 with 32MB of RAM and optimized par-port settings.

Better. Almost 4 times faster using a different driver and optimized PP settings. Still comes out to 700MB/1800 ~ 388 KB/sec. Internal Zip is twice as fast on my Cyrix Pr200+. The first guy responded:

True, you don't need the paride package, but as I understand it, the
paride package is newer and (I would assume) better. (Would someone
jump in here and explain the difference?) I tried the ep
driver with the SparQ drive, but it gave me some problems

Oh dear! Sparky software problems. On a production model. With a fairly sophisticated user. The second guy responded:

You're correct about the Paride being newer -- I stand corrected. When I get some time to screw with it, I will probably change to those drivers as well. :) The 1.25MB on the box (according to industry terminology) would mean mega-bytes. Mega-bits would have a lowercase 'b' (1.25Mb). However, who knows...truth in advertising will decide this one. :) As for an optimized parallel port (sounds greater than it really is) -- I just meant that the port is utilizing 32-bit EPP mode and delay is set to zero. This is done when the driver is loaded. (It is documented in the ep.c source)Instead of just 'insmod ep' -- I use: insmod ep ep_mode=5 ep_delay=0
I am no par-port expert, but from what I understand all systems will not support the 32-bit EPP mode...give it a try though...it can't hurt. :)

So individual results are extremely variable. Just as we know they are for Zip. BTW, PP Zip has over 6 optimization settings. Note his comment about truth in advertising. No one is getting 1.2M/sec out od Sparky. What I've been saying all along about Sparky.

There are more posts about driver bugs, but you get the point. Software has bugs, Rocky, and not just IOM software. I have no doubt that when some Windows SYQT newsgroup is formed, we'll see the same kind of problems there too.

So, Rocky, please try to use the subjunctive mood more often. Your declarative sentences so rarely end up being true.

Not as funny as when your mother cought you "exploring your genius," but still a good story:

Couple caught with pants down in church
MADRID (Reuters) - An Spanish couple were literally caught with
their pants down at church on Sunday when members of a stunned
congregation surprised them in the throes of passion.

"They weren't actually having sex but the girl's trousers were down
around her ankles and they were very touchy-feely," a police
spokesman in the northern Spanish city of Valladolid said on
Monday.

The male of the saucy pair was later detained when he resisted
police efforts to a put a stop to what they called "obscene acts."

RE: AOL Earnings projections and growth

Lets see .90 in 1998. A PE of a 100

Lets see 1.63 in 1999. A PE of 55.

Two years to get to a PE of 55.

Thats pretty long.

About the Mavica--

you can take the floppy directly out of the camera and then put it in your PC or Mac.

You can't do that with Vapor!--unless you buy the extra $200 Vapor! external drive
for your PC.<<<<

Rocky...

Just because you don't have a couple hundred bucks to buy the latest technolgy doesn't mean that millions of other people can't afford this realitvely cheap product... I for one will be one of the first to purchase it... My interest is mainly in digital photography applications but I will be honest and admit that I am also into the "toy" aspect of this cool product... If CLIK! lives up to it's potential and helps me elminate or at least reduce how much I currently spend on film and trips to the photo store to have pic.s developed I'll consider that a bonus... Finally it is quite easy for me to justify this purchase simply by calculating the many, many... many thousands of $$$ I've earned and will continue to earn from being long IOM...

GOOD LUCK... Cabeza de Piedra...

RE: You wrote, "I didn't think the Iomega TV ad I saw (the big plane thing) were bad. But they didn't
exactly hit a home run either. They were very safe. Syquest's radio ads IMO were very
good. I still remember the situations the announcer described, and the solution catch
phrase "3 Gigs for $300 bucks" very well. And it's been awhile since I've heard the ad.
It's too bad SyQuest doesn't have the resources to push their stuff on TV. If SyQuest
did TV ads as well as they did radio, they could really clean Iomega's clock."

There are two things about this that i don't agree with (and to be fair, let me repeat that i said i was not impressed with Iomega's big plane ads):

1. Syquest's radio ads IMO were very good. I still remember the situations the announcer described..."

The situation was stupid. As i remember the ad, a guys business was growing so fast that he couldn't fit all his data on his hard drive. Well, maybe it is time for him to buy a larger hard drive, a new computer or even move up to a network. Or buy one of the many removable storage products out there.

2. the solution catch phrase "3 Gigs for $300 bucks" Low price is very rarely a good reason to buy a product. Especially one that if it breaks down could cost a business a lot of money. And remember, if Syquest is targeting businesses in the ad, they can write this stuff off.

Finally, let me comment on: It's too bad SyQuest doesn't have the resources to push their stuff on TV. If SyQuest did TV ads as well as they did radio, they could really clean Iomega's clock.

Rocky, sometimes you almost get it: if if ifSyQuest... [had] the resources to push their stuff on TV..."

A few years ago Syquest had a chance. Let's not blame Syquest or glorify Iomega, but let's be honest. Syquest may be able to sell enough of its various products (which are all incompatable to each other and had no OEM support) to avoid bankrupcy for a few years, but the company has little hope of ever hiting the big time.

Iomega, on the other n.hand (pun, in case you missed it) sells way more drives and and makes more money than any of it competitors. OEMs are increasing, sales are increasing and margines are increasing. Even if their products are not the cheapest or the best, they own this market as a direct result of theit marketing department (i am thinking that i want to go into marketing, so i read a lot about this subject) so with 12+ drives sold (and shipping about one million more per month), they are very unlikely to lose this position.

At this point in time, i think it is safe that Iomega (the company) will do very well going forward. As for IOM (the stock), in the long run it will be fine. Short term, your guess is as good as anyones.

Now now Rocky, there is a long way from remembering an ad to buying a syquest product....

Remember, when you walk in the store, the first thing you see is Iomega and then the salesperson tells you it is the best seller....

Rock, as i said before, Syquest may sell a few drives, but Iomega is the marker leader. You know that as well as i do.

Time for me to go to bed. Have a nice night. Are you going to a play or something? NYC is cool.

Rocky. Oh, my Rocky.

You were very naughty on the main IOM thread today. Posting replies to this thread on that one. You seem to have caught on to our little secret. I knew you would before long, you clever boy.

Andy Warhol would have been proud of you - becoming the #4 hottest subject in SI today. Mr. Pink can't hold a candle to you. Yet you spurn your new illgotten fame. Why, Rocky? Oh, my Rocky.

Your exploits are now legendary, as are your conflicting points of view: the ones you back with words, and the ones you back with wealth. Please make me understand it all some day - Rocky, oh, my Rocky.

Your posts today are as numerous (and welcome) as the grains of sand in my shorts after a day at the beach.

I just had to be a part of the historical event that is taking place right here on Rocky's thread, so I have returned to SI to say these words...

Rocky,

Will you marry me?

Love,
V.

(Ed, do you think he'll say, "Yes"?? I put that internal Zip on my new computer as you know so I guess this will be our first argument. Rats! The honeymoon's already over! :)

Rocky, you'd better talk to your fiance. You don't want to see her "Rachel" personna. Trust me.

BTW, your posts today are full of ... well ... the usual stuff.
