It remains a puzzle to me why it is thought bad for USA that people in China work for low pay to make things by the megaton for Americans in exchange for US$ promissory notes which might or might not be worth anything when the promises to deliver are requested.

If people in USA don't make anything wanted by people in China then the US$ holders can go shopping elsewhere such as in the oil and coal markets where US $ are accepted.

Well, if I am a company importing goods from China and I fear that the random number generator in the White House might actually impose a 25% tariff soon, I am going to bring in as much product as I can now, especially since the end of the holiday season has freed up warehouse space.
