I was wrong, my mistake. But still if you don't have an apple cdrom drive and want to upgrade to 8.1 sans HFS+, is the upgrade still possible. My take is that it isn't unless you're willing not to use your cd-rom drive in 8.1.

The procedure you are describing is very similar to upgrading from Windows 3.11 to any of the Windows NT varieties, especially NT 4.0.

Sure you can install Windows NT 3.51 or NT 4.0 over a FAT formatted hard drive, but you won't be able to get the core advantages of NT.

To do this, it is recommended that you backup your files an reformat the drive to use NTFS. Once formatted as NTFS, you can install your Winders NT, but I don't think you can install DOS or Wind 3.11 on that drive.

I think it's a fact of life on any platform that they are going to find newer more efficient ways of twisting the drive around.
