PC World Tabs Gateway 2000 as the Best Place to Buy a PC

January 20, 1998 03:03 AM

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 20, 1998-- Web Sales Pioneer Earns Top Scores for Both Online and Direct Sales Experience

Gateway 2000, Inc. GTW , today announced that PC World magazine named Gateway 2000 as the best company to buy a PC either direct or via the web in its February 1998 cover story "Store Wars, The Best and Worst Places to Buy a PC." According to PC World, "The score says it all. Gateway's efficiency, knowledge and selection were impressive."(a) The top ranking complements the magazine's last two annual readers' polls that named Gateway as the best place to buy both home and business PCs.

"We are very pleased with the results of the PC World findings," said Bart Brown, vice president of marketing, Gateway Direct. "We take our 'You've got a friend in the business' slogan very seriously. Our commitment to our customers really becomes evident with this type of an award and our high level of customer loyalty."

The feature story chronicles the experiences of the magazine's editorial staff as they buy PCs from a wide variety of vendors. The staff compiled the rankings based upon each company's products, services, and overall experience. In the direct mail order category, Gateway's near perfect scores bested competitors such as Dell, Micron, IBM Direct, NEC Now, CompUSA Direct, and Quantex.

"Savvy PC shoppers know that buying directly from the manufacturer is a great way to go. The prices are competitive, the technology is cutting edge, and you can get the exact PC that you want," the article states. "The first thing that distinguishes mail order from the rest is the (mostly) excellent sales help. Most mail order sales reps knew the systems they were selling from top to bottom and made intelligent recommendations-without high-pressure sales pitches."(a)

Gateway No.1 Online Vendor

PC World also honored Gateway 2000's web site as the best place online to buy a PC. The magazine notes that shopping for a PC online can be more convenient and allows the consumer to gather information and custom configure systems to meet their needs.

"While our web site generates millions of dollars every day in sales, it is more than a transactional device," added Brown. "www.gateway.com is an integral part of the Gateway community. It serves not only as a tool to custom configure and buy PCs, but it is also a great place to learn about computers and find technical support after making apurchase. The web has become an excellent site for us to communicate with our customers and they with us."

Gateway Products

In the same issue, PC World also awarded four Gateway 2000 products their Best Buy award. Gateway received top honors for the best budget desktop PC, best Power notebook, and best budget Home PC. PC World highlights Gateway's outstanding features and designs as well as the company's service and support.
