The fees on M/F's have been lowered over time but you are absolutely correct they were not short term investments. No loads came a little after. as an employee there were certain funds that allowed employees or brokers to but at NAV. It was a very high commission business.

I love talking about the "good ole days" although much has improved. During my working days, the only funds that I bought were in my 401k and those were at NAV. We had a great 401k and our match was often many multiples of what I invested. Some of the funds available such as Washington mutual Investors or the Investment Company of America were really early day versions of DGI
