I see a huge die-off, followed by a wiser arising. The Earth abides, as does The Dude.

The formation of the Seventh Day Adventists and Jehovah's Witness came out of the Millerite Great Disappointment of 1844 where millions of people became convinced that a date calculated in the 1840's was the end of the world - people did all the things that people do when faced with that - many giving away possessions.

Unlike doomsday created by mythic gods against which we have no escape, technologies often come to the rescue for secular problems - like automobiles as a solution to horses, the rotary switch as a solution to the pending "operator crisis" of the 1940s (that never happened) and polio and small pox eradication.

Engineers and scientists will fix problems if given direction and funds. There is no problem we have now that can't be solved with an engineering solution given that all the people alive today would fit inside of Texas with room to spare. We have the oceans, we will have fusion, we can feed the multitudes if deniers get out of the way and we can stop killing everything in sight and cutting down the forests.
