Since you like walking, the next time you are in NYC you should get a walking tour of NYC book. There are several around and I can't remember which one I used before. But Amazon seems to say City Walks New York and Walking Manhattan are good books. There is definitely a lot to be discovered in Manhattan. My friend and I once thought of creating a tourist map of the city similar to the famous Nancy Chandlers’ Map of Bangkok. But we couldn't make it because there is so much density in Manhattan. You need multiple transparencies to point out various aspects of the city on the same map.

I grew up on the lower east side in the 'Alphabet City' area. Ethnic enclave back then, the changes over the years have been astounding, now you need a couple mil just to buy a place in that area. My mom and grandfather used to take us to the beach at Coney on the subway...
