JAPAN'S SOFTBANK TO START CHANNEL ASSEMBLY BUSINESS

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Softbank Corp. (J.SFT or
9984) will start a channel assembly business,
installing software and peripherals to personal
computers according to retailers' specifications, in
mid February to help counter shrinking profit
margins in its software division, the Nikkei
Industrial Daily said Tuesday.

Softbank, which controls more than 60% of
Japan's PC software wholesale market, has seen
its profit margin drop to around 10% amid falling
software prices.

The company hopes to attain sales of Y15 billion
from the channel assembly business in its first
year, and it expects to raise annual sales to Y50
billion within three years, company officials told
the newspaper.

Before of the startup of the new of business,
Softbank plans to establish tie-ups with six
software companies, such as Microsoft Corp.
(MSFT) and Justsystem Co., six PC peripheral
makers, including 3Com Japan (COMS), and with
PC makers, such as Compaq KK (CPQ) and
Hewlett-Packard Japan Ltd. (HWP).
