Barbara, the Y2K problem IOM will see a dramatic uptick in new software and hardware sales going into late 1998 and all the way through 1999-00. Why try to fix a car with 150,000 miles on it when for almost the same price you can get a new one. The legacy data will be split from legacy systems and ported into new packages... While I do see a great need for conversion and upgrade solutions I think they'll be a monster boost to new hardware/software solutions as well.

While its a naive comparison because my systems don't remotely compare to large systems, I've had to upgrade at least ten times now from early Z80 systems through Pentium II's, each time installing new software that had to back-retrieve data from previous systems.
Stripping out the pertinent data from an old dBase or borland program_ and stripping editing and display code from old word processing programs to have only text files, leaving the rest behind_ has been the most time consuming task.

I now backup all important data and text files in two formats.. one in the current program I'm using.. and one in the most primitive format possible for easier integration into future programs.
