SANTA CLARA, Calif.(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 1998--
End-to-End Solution Totals Over 17,500 Modem Ports
and Thirteen Backbone Routers
Bay Networks, Inc. (NYSE: BAY) today announced that ZipLink, a significant provider of Internet backbone and access services for the WebTV Network and exclusive Internet and one number telecommunications service provider to MTX Paging Products, LLC, a Motorola and Timex joint venture (Beepwear), has selected the Bay Networks System 5000(tm)-based model 5399 carrier-class Remote Access Concentrator for its Internet connection requirements. ZipLink selected the Bay Networks concentrator solution based on its superior performance, high port density, scalability and clear migration path to future IP technologies. In its initial network build-out plan, ZipLink plans to install more than 365 model 5399 modules, which totals over 17,500 modem ports. The company also chose the Bay Networks Backbone Concentrator Node (BCN(R)) routing solution for its new network backbone requirements, based on the product's industry-leading performance and scalable, open architecture.
Ziplink provides Internet backbone and access services for the Web appliance marketplace, including products such as the WebTV Internet Terminal and WebTV Plus Receiver and the Motorola/Timex new Beepwear pager watches. In a market that demands high reliability, the Bay Networks model 5399 Remote Access Concentrator meets Ziplink's requirements for scalability and high port density by providing support for more than 2,300 simultaneous dial-in users in a standard eight foot cabinet. In addition, the Bay Networks BCN routers provide the high capacity backbone that is critical to support the enormous bandwidth needs of Ziplink's client base.
"We chose Bay Networks because they have the best end-to-end solution for our networking and remote access requirements, as well as a clear migration path to future IP technologies such as voice/fax and multimedia," said Christopher Jenkins, president of Ziplink. Jenkins added, "as the telecommunications landscape becomes increasingly complex, the ability to remove compatability issues in our core backbone was also very attractive."
With support for either K56Flex(tm) or x2(tm) , the 5399 Remote Access Concentrator offers large telcos and ISPs unmatched flexibility, while also providing high-density access capabilities at a low cost per-port. Based on DSP modem technology, the model 5399 is software upgradeable to the eventual V.PCM standard, and emerging technologies such as voice and fax-over-IP, ensuring that users can capitalize on their investment.
"With its new network build-out, Ziplink is providing the Web appliance and ISP markets with a new class of service," said Steve Pearse, executive vice president of the Internet/Telecom Business Group at Bay Networks. "Ziplink's selection of Bay Networks as its end-to-end solution provides them with the flexibility and scalability required to keep pace and grow with this dynamic market."
Bay Networks BCN delivers the performance required for the most demanding internetworks using FDDI, T3, ATM, and SNA backbones. The symmetric multiprocessor architecture, based on multiple routing engines and the 1 Gbps PPX, delivers the highest performance in the industry -- up to 1 million pps.
