You want to fine tune the Soc Sec timing? Start women later. They have a considerably longer life expectancy. Of course, we could be gentlemen, and keep it even :)

I have an idea...Let's not give the government any of my money in the form of FICA, so I can say when I retire and when I can begin distribution to me.

But you cannot and should not change it for anyone within say 15-20 years of retirement.
You could if you did it slowly. Increase the standard age by 3 months/year, gets it to 70 in 12 years. I don't know if that is fast enough to help, but it is something that anyone could adjust to.

Today's 20-40 year olds should be told SS starts at age 75-80.

They have time to save on their own.

But politicians will then find it necessary to force a government tax on earnings to make sure that they save for later SS payments...

uhm....

oh...never mind.
