I've met nice and happy people who were all covered with tats... so, perhaps, somehow it "works" for some.
Not “covered” but I’ve got a couple I’m happy with.

People rarely think ahead. I always thought marring one's own body for peer recognition is pretty weak. Our son wanted an earring when he was 14. We told him that was a grown up decision, and he could do what he liked when he was an adult, but no erring till then. He never did get that earring and recently thanked us for offering him a compromise. I hear there is a thriving tattoo removal business for those who've changed their minds. IMO the scars are worse.

Now that tats are commonplace people are looking for other forms of attention grabbing schemes. These new lizard like contact lenses are pretty creative, but once that fad runs its course people will come up with other ways of attracting attention. There are the physical alterations and then there are the emotional strategies like the kind Jussie Smollett devised. He wasn't smart and didn't realize some of the things he did are felonies. He would have been better off coming up with some physical alteration to garner more attention and more $$. What he did is not creative but very smarmy.

I've often wondered what handing out a participation trophies like candy to every kid on the team was going to get us?
