Mark Haines factoid from CNBC: Of 1360 analyst recommendations in 1997 only 160 were sell recs.

I heard that too - although I believe the numbers were much worse then you state, more like 120/13,000. In addition, these were not "SELL" recommendations, they were made up of anything that sounded remotely more negative than "HOLD". I'd bet the actual number of "SELL" recommendations could be counted on one hand.
