GTE Selects Sun's Scalable Starfire Servers With R/3 to
Address Growing Transaction Needs

Sun Microsystems to Provide $17 Million in Systems and Services to GTE

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 1998--Sun Microsystems Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW
- news) today announced that GTE, one of the largest publicly held telecommunications
companies in the world, has selected four Sun(TM) Enterprise(TM) 10000 servers (also
known as Starfire(TM)) running the Solaris(TM) operating environment, with the SAP
R/3 solution to meet the fast growing transaction processing needs throughout GTE.

Sun will also provide GTE with implementation assistance through Sun Professional
Services. The purchase of Sun systems and services totals $17 million (U.S.) over the
next year.

Sun's Starfire servers will allow GTE to manage its corporate and financial data --
that currently run on a mainframe system -- at much greater performance levels and
achieve better scalability. GTE also required a system that could handle batch load
requirements in excess of one million transactions per hour.

Sun's scalable systems will enable GTE to accommodate an increasing number of users
over time. GTE ultimately plans to support 15,000 users running R/3 globally, making
it one of the largest SAP sites in the world.

In addition, GTE's use of the Solaris 2.6 operating environment and R/3, which are
fully Year 2000 compliant, will address aspects of the company's Year 2000
compatibility issues. Over time, GTE's move to R/3 on Sun systems will replace more
than 30 existing legacy systems.

The GTE R/3 system will be implemented in stages beginning with the introduction of
the Finance and Human Resources modules in all U.S. business operations. The current
schedule calls for nationwide completion by year-end 1999.

''After careful evaluation of the major UNIX(R) open systems vendors, GTE chose Sun
and SAP for proven scalability of the system and overall cost efficiency,'' said
Grace Lawrence, vice president, infrastructure management at GTE. ''The R/3 solution
on Sun systems integrates our customer, employee and financial information into one
business application suitable for all our business units.''

''We are extremely pleased to be chosen by GTE for their R/3 project,'' said Mark
Tolliver, vice president of market development for Sun Microsystems Computer Company.
''The competitive environment of the telecommunications industry requires business
systems that can respond rapidly to changing information requirements and an increase
in processing volumes. That's why Sun has invested to make our servers the highest
performance, most scalable platforms for enterprise applications like R/3.''

Sun Professional Services Completes the Solution

GTE also teamed with Sun Professional Services to ensure a safe and expedient
platform migration. Sun's consulting organization is experienced in transferring
large enterprise R/3 installations on to the Enterprise 10000 platform. Sun deployed
a team to work closely with GTE staff to plan and manage the platform migration of
the GTE production environment. Sun Professional Services provided project management
for this effort in order to ensure GTE's aggressive migration schedule was met.

Sun Professional Services consultants' extensive R/3 migration experience allowed GTE
to minimize the disruption to its operations while optimizing its R/3 on Sun system
performance. Sun Professional Service consultants helped install, configure, and
integrate the Enterprise 10000 R/3 platforms and migrate the current production
system data on to the new Sun platform. The Enterprise 10000 systems were fully
tested and validated before final deployment.

Systems Purchased

Along with the four Sun Enterprise 10000 servers, GTE has also purchased several
Ultra(TM) 2 workstations, Enterprise 4000 servers, Sun(TM) RSM Array(TM) Model 200
storage trays, and StorageTek tape backup units. The R/3 solution from SAP runs along
with Oracle's database 7.2.3.
