Re: 56k

I don't know all of your details, but I'll give you mine:

At my office I have an account with Erol's, which currently supports 56 flex, but not x2. I'm using a Motorola 56 flex modem and I usually connect at 48000. Using an x2 modem I can't connect at better than 28800 or 31200, because my provider (Erol's) doesn't support the technology. Does your ISP support the 56k technology of your 56k modem?

I have one on new Compact Presario and it has NEVER connected at higher than 28k due likely to dirty line.

1. Are you implying that 56k won't work, or questioning if 56k will work in light of <=28.8 connects?

2. What brand is your modem? I assume it's a non-USRobotics modem, since you have a Compaq.

3. What brand are the RAC modems at your ISP?

4. Has your ISP implemented 56k?

I have major cross talk on my line, yet still get 45.3-48kbs x2 connects consistently.

Thats interesting, since my buddy connects at 57K using a X2.
If this is only happening to you during winter period, the there is a chance that you "grounding". Possibly due to the rains. This means, it wouldn't matter what kind of modem you use. Call your phone company, and they will send someone to check out, and they will repair the line for a small fee.
