Joon, re: your reasoning,

"by selling the 5-packs to OEMs, the OEMs will take care of helping the customer getting it working and much less likely for the drive to get returned to Iomega."

Yes, I agree with you wholeheartedly, it would be much less of a pain to Iomega to sell the drives to smaller dealers (OEM's). It would also be much less of a pain to the big chains to not have to deal with them. So, maybe it's a "gentleman's agreement" - Iomega doesn't push these to the chains, and the chains don't ask for them, but take all the externals they can get. After all, they got them at first, when manufacturing capacity was much lower, but not now.

Joon, "He takes it home, can't get it working, and returns it. I'm not sure what CompUSA would do with it, but I would guess it gets returned to Iomega and becomes Iomega's problem."

These are usually sold as open box items marked down 15-20% at Best
Buy, Circuit City, etc. If you take a look
around, there are a lot of open box items, but Circuit City
has just recently made it more difficult by getting stricter
with their restocking fee.

I was lucky enough to pick up a SCSI
insider which was missing the instruction manual for $50 after
the $50 rebate last year from Best Buy. Whatever the case, IOM
won't have to deal with it.
