Unfortunately, most people (especially West of the Suez) see scriptural statements as fact, meaning as literal, and metaphorical events as concrete historical events. This is a trap and comes easily with a materially-minded grounding. There are sufficient Christians of that nature to be dangerous in the west... But yes... Islam started some 700 years after Christianity and seems to about 700 years behind still in interpretation and accepting modern knowledge except for tools of destruction... I assume materially minded cannot be in the western sense... as in accumulation of stuff.. being a primary driver of modern culture...and economics...
