During the campaign of 2016, Trump insisted that he could boost the economy’s long-term, sustainable growth rate to 3% or even more by unleashing the productivity of the private sector. But it turns out that getting to 3% growth and staying there is harder than Trump and his aides counted on. How unlikely is achieving sustainable 3% growth? It would require productivity growth rates to triple. Or a massive influx of immigrants.
