If the US was not directly south of Canada it is likely Canada would not last more than a few months as a sovereign nation.

The cold climate keeps most of the undesirables from coming across your border. Same for VT and NH

Once upon a time we built the best jet fighter on earth

I had beers with a guy I met in Bangkok who was retired from the Canadian Air Force.

I had not even been aware Canada had an Air Force.

What is also unique about Canada, is that they have a much stronger nation to the south, that not only protects it, but does not invade it. That says something good about the USA that the left wing lunatics would be reluctant to acknowledge.

Canada, the US and Mexico (well, not so much Mexico) have been blessed to have each other as neighbors. This continent could have been a bloody open sore like Europe.

Jefferson went against his own principles and instincts and bought Louisiana. Manifest Destiny is often cited as America's second sin (slavery being its original sin), but the US as a continental power brought peace to North America, save a few skirmishes with Mexico and the War of 1812.

The alternative may have been the American Civil War-style continental conflict between rival powers - for generations. Horrible.
